In 2004 Keen Company received a Drama Desk nomination for Best Revival of a Play for our production of PULLMAN CAR HIAWATHA,
two short plays by Thornton Wilder (OUR TOWN). As the kickoff
of our tenth anniversary season, we present an evening of five
short plays by the American master, all of which will be making
their New York professional premieres!
The program includes SUCH THINGS ONLY HAPPEN IN BOOKS,
in which a domestic life is slowly unwrapped to reveal the complexities at the heart of all families; CEMENT HANDS, in which an uncle tries to explain to his niece the precariousness of marrying a tight-fisted young fellow; and THE ANGEL THAT TROUBLED THE WATERS, which shows the healer’s pain, and how his suffering makes him most human. As A. R. Gurney has pointed out about Wilder’s work, “time and again he suggests that behind all the trivialities and absurdities and agonies of everyday life there must be a valid meaning, which at least poets and saints are able to perceive dimly and darkly, and
toward which they can point us.”
"Transcendent! Touching and unexpected,
with smart performances by the ensemble cast."
- Variety
"Fully realized by a strong cast. Wilder's one-acts
deftly explore the psychological complexity of simple folks."
-The New Yorker

In 2007 Keen Company produced the first major New York revival of Robert Anderson’s TEA & SYMPATHY. In Variety, Mark Blankenship wrote, “Once again, Keen Company has invigorated an overlooked play. The troupe's taut revival lays bare a dense thicket of psychological need that makes the play feel arrestingly modern.” In conclusion of our tenth anniversary, Keen will present another landmark work from Mr. Anderson, his 1968 classic, directed by Drama Desk nominee Jonathan Silverstein (THE DINING ROOM).
