A LETTER FROM ANNIE

Dear Friends,

One of the main reasons I felt so drawn to join Keen Company is because of its education program: Keen Teens. This season happens to mark the 20th Anniversary of the program - what a wonderful cause for celebration! This is a professional development program that's free for NYC teens. The mission of Keen Teens is to provide high school students the opportunity to collaborate with professional playwrights, directors, and designers on a festival of Off-Broadway world-premiere plays. I know personally how impactful a program like this can be on a teenager. When adolescents are immersed in the arts, they learn critical skills for development, like what it means to be a part of a team: accountability, getting the assignment done -- not only for their own benefit or reward, but more importantly, for the greater good of the team and for something bigger than them. We live in a time when anxiety is at an all-time high for teenagers. The arts can be a salve for that anxiety; providing meaning to context, helping young people understand and confront emotions, and to do so together, as a team.

A LETTER FROM KELLY

Dear Friends,

Many of you don’t know me well. I’m new to Keen, and so is Annie, my dear friend and collaborator of over a decade. We knew we were undertaking a challenge when we decided to be part of the full leadership transition for a small NYC theater company. It’s a wild thing to do, but perhaps never more so than now. It’s our duty and honor to uphold the mission of Keen, and the only way we can do that is by being frank: we need your support. Today, we’re launching our end of year campaign, KEEN ON KEEN, and we’re asking you to help us by making a gift by the end of December.

At Keen, we believe in the power of making art with your hands. Keen has always been led by people who follow their hearts. We are a small Off-Broadway company trying to be a beacon in a dark time. We keep things lean, nimble, and we are constantly evolving to keep Keen keening. It’s tough, but so far we are managing thanks to the generosity of our community. There’s no such thing as a drop in the bucket at Keen. Every donation helps. As you consider what you can do to support theater, know that your dollars go very far at Keen.
